Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions that get frequently asked!

If we choose KFLC can we still participate in Co-ops and other groups?
Yes! I encourage homeschool families to connect with groups and co-ops to enrich their journey with all kinds of experiences, and learn from a many different experts. KFLC can teach many of the classes your student needs, or can simply over-see your program.

Can my child still take part-time classes at the public school?
Yes! The purpose of KFLC is to help you determine the best course for YOUR student. If that includes still participating part-time in the public school, then let's do it. The ease of this will be determined by the school, your student's grade, and the class(es) your student wants to take.

Do we have to enroll in Academy Northwest to be part of KFLC?
Academy Northwest is a great option for homeschool families! I highly encourage parents to take advantage of it as much as possible. But if you choose to not enroll, you can still enjoy of all services KFLC has to offer. The classes won't be accredited, but there will be no difference in the program design.

If we are enrolled in KFLC do we still need to file a Declaration of Intent?
Maybe! If you are enrolled in Academy Northwest through KFLC then you do NOT file a declaration of intent as your student is enrolled in an accredited private school. If you choose not to enroll in Academy Northwest but still take advantage of KFLC's other services, you need to file a DOI for all children 8 years old and older. If you are enrolled in KFLC Homeschool Assistance program, you can check the box on the DOI that says you are being supervised by a certified teacher.

Are your courses online?
I am able to video conference with students who do not live in the area. I utilize Google Docs, Google Hangout, and email to grade work and meet with students. For these students I use our conference time to focus on specific skills or content that the student could use instruction in. I have created a distance photography course for highschoolers, but this isn't the main focus at KFLC. There are many institiutes that offer quality online classes and if that is what best serves your student's needs then we can take advantage of those.

What curriculum do you use?
This is one of the the best parts about partnering with KFLC. We don't require the use of any one particular curriculum! Our purpose is to help you select the one that best fits YOUR student and family's needs. There are many things to consider when selecting material and KFLC walks parents through this process. Sometimes we don't use pre-made curriculum at all and free-style it based on the student's interests and skills.

Homeschooling is free, why should we pay for services at KFLC?
Experience, education, and support! Not every parent is equipped with the skills necessary to direct their student's entire education. This is why KFLC partners with parents. You know your child better than anyone, and we know education. When we combine your intimate knowledge of your child with our passion to see children succeed in school, you get a winning combination. For each student that walks through our doors, hours of planning, brainstorming, and reserach goes into creating that perfect plan that is tailored just for you. KFLC offers parents and students the free use of our facility for school work, loans out books and resources, and is continually working to evalutate and improve the effectiveness of the program.
