What is Kitsap Family Learning Center?

Kitsap Family Learning Center is a consultation service provider for families who educate their children through home-based instruction.
Washington State Home-Based Instruction Laws state that a parent must meet the following requirements:
  • File a Declaration of Intent
  • Have a minimum of 45 college credits OR take a Parent Qualifying Course OR Meet with a certificated person for minimum of one hour a week.
  • Provide instruction in math, science, spelling, language, writing, reading, health/PE, music and art, social studies, history, and occupational education.
  • Have each student tested through standardized testing OR a non-test assessment.
  • Provide instruction over 180 days per year/1000 hours (450 hours for Kindergarten)

KFLC helps parents meet Washington State Home Based Instruction requirements through providing program planning sessions with parents, weekly contact with students,  and yearly non-test assessments. All of these services meet the requirements of the following RCW:
RCW 28A.225.010(4) requires that the instructional and educational activities be:
  1. Provided by a parent who is instructing his or her child only and is supervised by a person certificated under Chapter 28A.410 RCW. The supervision consists of and includes planning of objectives by the certificated person and the parent, a minimum each month of an average of one contact hour per week with the child being supervised by the certificated person, and evaluation of such child’s progress by the certificated person. The number of children supervised by the certificated person shall not exceed 30.

Affiliation with Academy Northwest

The services listed above are provided for independent homeschoolers, as well as those who would like to add accreditation to their program through Academy Northwest for the purpose of obtaining an official transcript (for all grades) and a state approved diploma upon gradation.  Academy Northwest (ANW) is an accredited private school, meeting all state and accreditation requirements to offer an extension program. The extension program is a partnership between parents and a certified person.
From the ANW website:
  • Hybrid home education with a private school extension program: parent-directed educational program in partnership with a private school designed to support homeschooling families through extension programs. The level of parental control varies by program. Typically, such schools offer classes once or a few days a week. Most of these programs have private school accreditation and provide parent coaching, report cards, transcripts. Some offer field trips and extracurricular activities.
For more information on how ANW works, please visit https://academynw.com

What is KFLC NOT?

KFLC is NOT a private school. We do not meet state requirements for operating as a private school. While ANW does have a full-time private school location, KFLC does NOT operate as a private school.
Private schools are required to plan lessons for all students in all subjects, hold class for 180 days/1000 hours, and keep student records. KFLC does not meet these requirements! Parents who choose to enroll in ANW understand that they are solely responsible for their child's education, and the certificated person over-seeing their program is there to provide guidance and support. Parents must meet all other state requirements for Home-based instruction.
For more information on private school requirements, see https://app.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=28A.195.010
